What is the thriller, spiller, and filler method?
Thriller: plants that are the upright “superstar” in the middle of the pot you have chosen.
Examples: ornamental grasses, variegated bamboo, canna lily, and elephant ears
Spiller: plants that grow over the edges of the planter and downwards
Examples: sweet potato vine, vinca vine, ivy, wave petunias, and bacopa
Filler: plants that are around the thriller, they can be plants that include flowers and or green foliage
Examples: geraniums, moss rose, alyssum, marigolds, and coleus
Make sure with this method you start with the thriller piece since that will be the center of attention in the planter. Then go in with the fillers and make sure you give enough room for them all to grow and flourish to their full potential. Then plant your spiller, this is the last plant that creates dimensions to your planter and makes it the perfect combination. Lastly, the most important step, once your three types of plants are planted as one, do not forget to water regularly and you have just created the perfect summer flowerpot!
